WhatsApp Spam Messages: Researchers have warned that the number of spam messages on WhatsApp may increase in the future. This is due to the introduction of AI agents that can automate spam campaigns.
WhatsApp Spam Message: WhatsApp is one of the most widely used messaging platforms worldwide. Billions of messages are sent daily across the globe. People use it for everything from personal to business purposes. However, the problem of spam messages has been troubling users for quite some time. Throughout the day, messages from unknown numbers and promotional offers are constantly arriving. Sometimes, messages even come from senders you’ve never heard of. Now, researchers have issued a warning. They say that the introduction of AI agents could exacerbate the spam problem. So, if you were hoping to get rid of spam messages, you’ll be disappointed. Let’s explore what AI agents are and how they could exacerbate the spam problem on WhatsApp.
AI agents are software systems designed to accomplish goals or tasks on their own. They possess reasoning, memory, and planning capabilities and continuously learn as they perform tasks. They can make decisions on their own after receiving user commands. They are completely different from chatbots. While chatbots simply answer questions, AI agents can perform tasks like booking tickets, ordering groceries, and shopping. They gather information from their surrounding environment, understand context, and make decisions based on that information. By automating workflows, they increase productivity and efficiency.
Now what is the danger from AI agent on WhatsApp?
A new study by Zenity, a cybersecurity company, has revealed that AI agents can send multiple spam messages to WhatsApp contacts simultaneously. The study also revealed that OpenAI’s Atlas web browser can be manipulated to send spam messages to WhatsApp contacts. However, this is not due to a flaw in WhatsApp itself. WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption remained secure and could not be bypassed during the experiment. The real issue is with AI browser agents that can send spam impersonating users. According to reports, more than 20 security issues have been discovered in AI browsers and extensions developed by companies like OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, Microsoft, and Perplexity. By misusing them, attackers can gain access to files stored on a user’s computer, control password managers, make unauthorized purchases on Amazon, and even automate spam campaigns for WhatsApp. This demonstrates the scale of the threat these vulnerabilities pose.
Another challenge has emerged regarding cyber security
AI browser agents pose a new challenge to cybersecurity because they can perform tasks on different websites with minimal user interaction. Michael Bergery, co-founder of the company that conducted the study, said that AI agents have weakened browser security controls and are once again experiencing attacks like those of 20 years ago. Now, a situation has arisen where browsers can be hijacked, compromising your account and data. Therefore, we must be very careful about the level of access we grant to AI agents.
What has OpenAI said about this threat?
Zenity informed OpenAI of this vulnerability in the Atlas browser in January of this year . In response, the company stated that it is continuously researching prompt-injection attacks and has rolled out updates to address the vulnerability. It’s also worth noting that OpenAI’s Atlas browser is shutting down on August 9th. The company has decided not to continue using it.
