The Asian country Japan is located in the Pacific Ocean. It comes in the list of places most affected by earthquakes. It is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire. This is the place where three tectonic plates, Pacific, Philippines and Eurasian plates meet. Due to this, earthquakes are felt in different parts of Japan every day. Every year 1500 earthquakes occur in the Tokara region of Japan. There are a total of 12 islands in Tokara, where a total of 700 people live.
The earth shook 183 times in a day in Tokara Islands
According to The Guardian report, Japan’s Tokara Islands have been hit by a spate of earthquakes in recent days. On 23 June 2025, 183 earthquakes were recorded in a single day. This number is many times more than any normal day. The situation after that has also been no less worrying. 15 earthquakes were felt on 26 June, 16 on 27 June, 34 on 28 June and 98 on 29 June.
Why are there so many earthquakes in Japan?
This is not the first time that the Tokara Islands have become the center of such an earthquake swarm. Data from previous years confirms this. While 346 earthquakes occurred in September 2024, 308 earthquakes were felt in December 2021. This makes it clear that this area is geologically very active and sensitive.
