Trinidad and Tobago Muslim Population: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday (July 3, 2025) as part of a two-day visit. The population of Trinidad and Tobago is around 1.3 million, out of which 45 percent are of Indian origin. Talking about a particular religion here, the number of Christian community is quite high. Here about 55.2 percent of the people follow Christianity. The population of those who follow Hinduism is 18.2 percent, while the population of those who follow Islam is only 5 percent. Apart from this, there are 21.6 percent people who do not believe in any religion.
Trinidad and Tobago presents an ideal of religious tolerance. Spiritual Baptists (5.7%), Orisha religion (0.9%), Rastafari (0.3%) are also recognized religions here. Every religion is recognized by the government and public holidays are fixed. All communities have the freedom to maintain their cultural identity.
Beginning of Hinduism in Trinidad and Tobago
Hinduism in Trinidad and Tobago began in 1838 with indentured labourers from India who were brought by British colonists to work in the sugar cane fields. They not only kept their language, customs and culture alive but today Hanuman temples, Shiva temples, and many other religious sites have become the identity of the place. The Hanuman Temple of Trinidad, which is 85 feet high and is the largest in the entire Western Hemisphere. Diwali Nagar, a cultural center where thousands of people gather every year on Diwali. Festivals like Shivaratri, Holi and Dussehra are celebrated with great enthusiasm. This visit of Prime Minister Modi confirms that India is serious about strengthening ties with its diaspora.
