Nimisha Priya, a nurse from Palakkad district in Kerala, was to be hanged on July 16 for the murder of her Yemeni business partner, Mahdi. She was sentenced to death in 202,0 and her last appeal was rejected in 2023. She is currently lodged in a jail in Sana’a, the capital of Yemen.
What did the central government say?
The Centre had informed the Supreme Court on Monday that the Government of India is making every effort, but not much can be done given the situation in Yemen. Attorney General R. Venkataramani told the bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta that the government wants to save its citizens and is making every possible effort in this matter. Venkataramani said, “The Indian government is trying its best and has also contacted some sheikhs, who are very influential people there.”
